## Can you share a little information about your professional background?

My fascination with technology began after my father took me to his laboratory at the Biological institute of Helgoland as a child. He was one of the first to use computers to model marine ecosystems. At 12, I began teaching myself software development on a Schneider CPC 464 – known under the Amstrad brand outside Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

After finishing school, I studied Physics at the University of Hamburg. There I got in touch with GNU/Linux.

Working on the GNU project in 1993, I started to question the role of technology in our lives. Technology can potentially impact our abilities and society dramatically, not always for the better. Questions of governance, the concentration of power, democracy, privacy, and self-determination have been the overarching theme of my career for the last 25 years.

These themes have led me to the Brave GNU World, writing monthly columns for international magazines, and becoming the founding President of the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). With the FSFE, I played a central role in the landmark antitrust case of the European Commission against Microsoft. I was also part of the German governmental delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIF), contributed to the creation and first editions of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), taught at the world bank, advised the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), served as an adviser to the European Commission, and sparked the global debate about the MS-OOXML standardization. I also worked closely with various industry organizations and global corporations such as IBM and Google throughout all of this.

My technical expertise has proved invaluable over the last 25 years. In 2009 it was rewarded, and I was presented the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon by the German President, recognizing my interdisciplinary work around Open technologies.

Shaping society for the better in the debate between technology, policy, and economy is a privilege for entrepreneurs. For that reason, I committed to the challenge of collaborating in confidence, with privacy and control over how we communicate.

That endeavor led to the creation of Kolab systems. While Kolab provided some key building blocks, the challenges it aimed to address have evolved, requiring newer, better solutions. That solution is Vereign.

## Can you describe your role at Vereign?

As Vereign’s co-founder and President of the board, I’m responsible for driving our vision for technology, product, and society. My 30+ years of experience as a senior technologist have given me unique insights that I apply to Vereign in my work with the technical team, customers, partners, and business specialists.

## Can you explain why you love working for Vereign?
Working at the bleeding edge of technology is exciting! For the first time, technology has matured to a level where we can build a system that combines openness, transparency, encryption, privacy, accountability, and user control. Vereign makes this dream a reality for 95% of users who had no access to such a thing before. Approaching essential human needs at this level with a fantastic team of business, legal, and technical experts is a great privilege.

## Vereign is all about openness, security, and the open-source community. Can you tell us why this is so important to you?

Security and openness are core values for any society worth living in. They are guiding principles in several articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. One of my first contributions to the Internet Governance Forum was an article on “Sovereign Software,” and its role in shaping society.

The Open Source Community works to create a more people-centric world based on openness, security, transparency, and democracy.

We’ve made huge contributions towards these goals, but centralization and concentration of power have grown exponentially.

Blockchain is a technology that outgrew The Open-Source Community, promising tooling for different power structures that can lead to more user-controlled organizational structures.

At Vereign, our mission is to build technologies that make this potential accessible for everyone, bringing us a huge step closer to the original goals of The Open-Source Community. That commitment is found throughout our organization, even down to our name – Verified & Sovereign. It is a society that can verify its openness and transparency and a solution that makes people and their social structures sovereign.

## What are you passionate about?
In my family, we’d all share an intense passion for ice hockey. We are part of the current Swiss champions, training more young players than any other club in Switzerland, including our boys.

## What is your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment will be when we make Vereign real for everyone.

## What’s next on your bucket list?
I want to see myself in the Swiss Ice Hockey app one day, which means I need to be good enough to join one of the senior league teams. So loads of training ahead, which I am going to enjoy.

## Can you share a little about your professional background?
After my studies of Marketing and Business Administration at the University of St. Gallen, I entered corporate life at a large marketing and distribution group with a focus on Asia. I raised through the ranks eventually, leading its Technology business unit in 8 countries in South East Asia. Taking a professional break for two years thereafter, I focused on private investments and my long standing hobby being the development and application of trading algorithms in crypto and forex markets. I have lived in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur before settling back in Zurich and founding Vereign.

## Can you describe your role at Vereign?
I am co-founder and in charge of marketing and operations. This comprises of the formulation, planning and execution of our commercial and financial propositions and the management of resources to achieve them. Having led large marketing and distribution organizations in a variety of Technology sectors and countries over many years, I am enjoying the ability to actually develop, brand and roll-out our own product from scratch - and put my experience at work with the stakes and care of an owner rather than a corporate agent.

## Can you explain why you love working for Vereign?
Vereign is a group of lovely people who are highly intelligent and senior in skills, energised and self-propelling, inquisitive and open, resourceful and innovative - and while all of them are originals they are yet totally united in creating a unique product that is set to making a real difference for privacy, self-sovereignty and digital empowerment... and on top of that I am learning something new, every day - What is there not to love!?

## Vereign is all about openness, security and the Open Source community. Can you tell us why this is so important to you?
I see openness and security both as prerequisites for humans to trust each other, to share information and to progress as a whole. They are values and inclusive strategy at the same time in order to truly engage with the ingenuity of others.

The decision to build Open Source allows us to establish public trust and give back to the community, to move faster, not to reinvent the wheel and to validate our assumptions.<strong> </strong>

## What are you passionate about?
I am a family man and that is what I am most passionate about. I also enjoy a good round of golf, home-cooked food and dry hopped India Pale Ale with my friends.

The key to Vereign’s commercial take off is endorsement and large-scale adoption by users. I am certainly very passionate about making that happen. The next phase, however, will start when our contributions and infrastructure are picked up and built upon by the community and an ecosystem evolves. That is the utility and recognition, I am dreaming of.

To be decisive and not regret.

## Can you share a little of your professional background?

My career started in tech as Technical Support. After being a System Administrator for a number of years I rolled into my first role as a QA Engineer. I now have about five years of experience as a QA Engineer, of which I worked as a Team Lead for two and a half years. Over the years I have worked for leading companies in multiple sectors varying from the global E-Commerce giant Rakuten to the FinTech company SumUp.

## Can you describe your role at Vereign?

I am the head of QA. In my role I test everything that Vereign creates and I contribute to the development of Quality Assurance by testing philosophies, methodologies and everything from manual to automation. By doing so I ensure that the quality level of our applications is as high as true Swiss standards. My responsibilities include testing products and software to ensure quality and a successful rollout. I also assist in a variety of quality assurance testing activities, including developing and executing test scenarios and cases in line with the system requirements.

## Vereign is all about openness, security and the Open Source community. Can you explain why this is so important to you?

I personally think that it is awesome to work for an Open Source project. Reason why is that whenever you want or need something additional or you simply want to change something, you can just download it, fix or tweak it and then use it without any questions being asked. I like this freedom and it also creates a community filled with passionate people.

## What are you passionate about?

One word: quality. When I use a product, the first thing I am interested in is quality. It is the one thing that everyone wants and expects from a product, yet no one cares or talks about it until it is not there.

## Can you share a little about your professional background?
I am a German lawyer and my specialty is computer technology. I am also well versed in IT, e-Commerce, data protection, distribution and general private (international) law. My PhD Thesis was focused on governmental accountability for vendor-neutral ICT standards.

Besides being a licensed lawyer, I have been working as a legal counsel for a leading worldwide operating logistics company for over seven years now, where I am soon about to become the CISO. Overall, the intersection between legal requirements along with business demands and their implementation in information technology continues to be my major point of professional focus.

## Can you describe your role at Vereign?

I am a Co-Founder of Vereign and also the Head of Legal. It is my responsibility to “reality check” our solution. By doing so, I ensure that no harm will be caused to our value proposition and that we are able to fulfil our vision. This does not only mean legal compliance (e.g. data protection) but also to ensure that we deliver the intended legal relevance and improved value from a business perspective. We are not building a solution for laboratory conditions or a mental game. We are building a solution for the “real world”. Besides that, I check each and every contractual relationship of the company and engage in contractual negotiations if necessary.

## Can you explain why you love working for Vereign?
One of the many reasons why I love working for Vereign is that we tackle a crucial, and up to now, missing piece for a self-sovereign private life, a truly digital economy and a functioning e-government. We have been promised these things for decades but due to self-serving technology providers, we have not yet established the necessary founding blocks for these future visions. I firmly believe, that we at Vereign are helping to achieve and working towards that goal, which is great. Another reason why I really enjoy working with our dedicated team members, is that each one of them inspire me every day.

## Vereign is all about openness, security and the Open Source community. Can you tell us why this is so important to you?
As a private user, Open Source Software and I go years back – for decades. Open Source Software has taught me what information technology is about and even the most painful experiences have proven to be the most valuable to me. I like to make the comparison of proprietary software and Open Source to “ready-made food” and “cooking yourself”. Even though I never managed to think of recipes myself, following the recipes of others has taught me much more than putting a deep-frozen pizza in the oven.

For our professional solution, one of the major reasons for Open Source is the security aspect. Although it continues to be a persistent myth, “security through obscurity” proves over and over to be a very harmful and expensive misconception. Open Source Software is the only software license and development model that offers verifiable security through its openness.

## What are you passionate about?
I am a family man with a wife and very soon three kids, whom I am absolutely passionate about. Like most people, I like to spend time with my friends too. There are also some other rather obvious things like listening to music and enjoying a good read. Other things I am passionate about are society, technology and law. In particular it is the intersecting areas in between those fields that excite me.

## What is your biggest accomplishment?
My kids and my wife, of course!

## How would others describe you?
Hopefully, as an honest and dedicated man, who believes in what he is doing.

## What’s next on your bucket list?
Out of all things that are listed on my bucket list, I would definitely like to learn how to scuba dive. But due to time restrictions, I may have to settle with learning how to beatbox first.
